Odd Japanese English : SMART

Maybe the general perception is that slim people are smart? Or they mistook: "Hey, you look smart today!", for being slim? Hmmm...

  1. He-he, You've got very intelligent tummy here, Eva-san! It looks smart also :P

BTW, I do not think that Japanese are 'slim' nation. There are many overweighted people too. And me, with my western constitution, did never think that me is looking fat compared to most of Japanese people I've met.

How was Your book presentation? I bet You was very busy and You are tired now.

    2. He-he, glad that You recovered. These exhibitions and presentations are such frustrating. I don't blame You for being blank and gaining weight. Hope You will get back to normal soon.

  2. In addition to intelligence, "smart" was also formerly used in American English to mean something like "fashionable" or "up to date"... I don't know for sure, but I'd bet that's how it came into Japanese, during the Occupation...
